BridgeStone Reveals New Run Flat Tyres — Here’s All The Details You Need To Know
Tyre manufacturer Bridgestone recently revealed more details about its new run flat tyre — DriveGuard at an event in the UK. Here's what one should know.
The run flat tyres, DriveGuard can be fitted on any conventional vehicle rim. When flat, the tyre car can be driven up to speeds of 80km/h, for a maximum distance of 80km.
On a conventional tyre, when it goes flat, the tyre's sidewalls get trapped between the rim and the road. When driven in this condition, it destroys the tyre quickly.
Self supporting run flat tyres on the other hand, have thicker. Or stronger sidewalls, that have enough strength to keep the rim suspended from the road.
The DriveGuard is made using Bridgestone's proprietary Nano Pro-Tech technology, which evens out the distribution of sulphur bonds between the carbon molecules in the compound.
This mixture reduces internal friction within the material and prevents heat generation in the sidewalls. Heat build-up is further reduced as the tyre rolls has a cooling fin design moulded into its sidewall.
Such a combination allows for a thinner sidewall, and a new structure helps to absorb bumps better and makes the overall ride experience better, compared to standard tyres.
Also, Bridgestone says that the tyre can be repaired with any authorised personnel or outlet as long as the tyre's sidewall has not been damaged. The tyre can be inflated, but Bridgestone does not suggest that without expert inspection.
At the moment, the Bridgestone sells the DriveGuard run flat tyres in 19 summer and 11 winter sizes. Tyre sizes range from 185/65 R15 to 245/40 R18.
