Assam Bans Launch And Sales Of Cars That Fail Crash Test!
Assam, the largest automobile market in northeast India has banned small cars that have failed crash tests from being sold. A court has banned the launch and sales of cars that do not meet crash test safety norms.
After an order by the order by the Gauhati High Court, sales of vehicles such as Maruti Suzuki Alto, Swift, Hyundai Eon, and even the Honda Jazz has been stopped.
This move could damage sales figures for automobile companies since the market is sluggish already.
"The Centre is directed not to permit the auto manufacturers to release and sell the small four-wheelers with a mass up to 1,500 kg and quadricycles without putting them to crash test and emission test," the court said in the interim order.
Responding to this, the authorities have asked dealers to stop selling vehicles that do not meet these norms. SUVs however, are allowed to be sold since they are bigger and can withstand impact better, compared to a hatchback.
Carmakers such as Maruti Suzuki, Toyota and Hyundai have confirmed that they are facing issues after the court order.
