Tata's Punch micro SUV is based on the HBX concept that was showcased at Auto Expo 2020. The micro SUV was codenamed Hornbill before it arrived in the second half of 2021 as the Punch.
The Punch looks very similar to the Tata HBX concept with a split headlight design at the front with the LED DRLs up top and the projector headlamps sitting lower on the bumper.
The LED DRLs are connected to each other by a gloss black grille and a strip of chrome. The lower section of the front bumper is done up in black plastic and features a large central air dam.
The sides of the Tata Punch sports black plastic cladding and the micro SUV features squared-off wheelarches that play host to 16-inch alloy wheels. The pillars are all blacked out and the C Pillars feature the door handles for the rear doors.
The rear section of the Tata Punch features an integrated spoiler element which hosts the third tail light. The taillamps are circular units with Y-shaped LED elements and there is a rhino motif on the rear windscreen. Similar to the front end, the rear bumper of the Punch features a lower black plastic section.
The Tata Punch is offered in 5 colour options - Tropical Mist, Daytona Grey, Meteor Bronze, Atomic Orange and Orcus White - all of which feature a black roof.
The interiors of the Tata Punch are easily accessible. The cabin of the Punch is a nice place to be inside. There are contrasting elements on the dashboard and on the door panels.
The multi-layered dashboard looks rather nice and plays host to a free-standing touchscreen infotainment screen which features Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support and comes paired with a 6-speaker Harman sound system. Underneath this sits rectangular vents for the climate control system which are mimicked on either edge of the dash. The controls for the climate control system sit quite low down on the central section of the dashboard.
The seats are quite high set and are quite a comfortable fit for everyone sitting inside and there is more than adequate room for the knees and the head. However, the Punch is slightly on the narrow side, so sitting three adults side by side isn't something we would recommend.
The Tata Punch is powered by a naturally aspirated 1.2-litre, inline 3-cylinder engine that produces 84bhp at 6,00rpm and 113Nm of peak torque at 3,300rpm. The Tata Punch's engine is paired with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed AMT automatic gearbox.
The Tata Punch offers a claimed ARAI mileage of 18.97km/l when the engine is paired with the 5-speed manual gearbox. The AMT variant of the Tata Punch delivers a claimed ARAI mileage of 18.82 km/l.
The Tata Punch comes packed with features like engine start/stop, automatic projector headlamps with LED DRLs, rain-sensing wipers, cruise control, electric folding mirrors, climate control, a cooled glovebox and the iRA connected car suite along with safety features like a rearview camera and twin airbags among others.
The Tata Punch micro SUV is quite an attractive offering and brings the SUV design language to a whole new section of the car market which has made it quite a popular option for the Indian car buyer.
