Bajaj Dominar 400 Design And Style

The Bajaj Dominar is one motorcycle which has upped the ante for Bajaj, taking the Pune-based auto giant to the next level. Styling is one of the many aspects where the Dominar excels, and takes the competition head-on. The unique LED headlamp is instantly recognisable even from a distance. The small windscreen and headlamp housing makes it look even better. The tank at first look seems large and has character lines flowing from it, all the way till the rear of the motorcycle. The design lines are straight-forward and barely uses any curves. What makes the Dominar stand out from even other Bajaj motorcycles is, the quality of the finish. The top of the tank also features some tell-tale lights, and this just adds to the design element. The side profile is characterised by the unique alloy wheels and the engine cowl. The radiator too plays a role in the design, enhancing the looks of the motorcycle. The short, stubby exhaust along with the contrasting silver-coloured swingarm make for a near-perfect-looking motorcycle.

Bajaj Dominar 400 Engine And Performance

Bajaj Dominar 400 Engine And Performance

The Bajaj Dominar is powered by a liquid-cooled, 373.3cc, fuel-injected, single-cylinder engine with a maximum power output of 34.5bhp and a peak torque output of 35Nm. This engine is by far, the most powerful engine ever in a Bajaj vehicle. The rear wheel is chain-driven via a 6-speed gearbox. The engine in the Dominar is the same unit used in Bajaj’s subsidiary KTM’s 390 Duke and RC 390 motorcycles. In the KTM machines, this engine is tuned to give its maximum output but in the Dominar, the output has been tuned down keeping in mind the customer Bajaj is targeting. Bajaj has redesigned the engine, adding its patented triple-spark technology to it, and this has been done keeping in mind higher fuel efficiency and a more relaxed and linear power delivery. 0-60km/h is done away with, in around 3 seconds and the motorcycle would then go on to accelerate till its top speed of just under 150km/h.

Bajaj Dominar 400 Fuel Efficiency

The Bajaj Dominar uses the 373.3cc from the KTM 390 siblings, but in a lower state of tune. The engine is tuned to produce lesser power, hence improving fuel efficiency. Bajaj has also implemented their patented triple-spark technology, which has further helped in squeezing out that last bit from every drop of petrol.

The Bajaj Dominar returns a mileage of 30km/l while being ridden in the city, and 40km/l out on the highway. A combined/average mileage of 35km/l is pretty reasonable for such a powerful motorycle.

Bajaj Dominar 400 Important Features

Bajaj Dominar 400 Important Features

The Bajaj Dominar boasts of many new important features, that are a first for Bajaj. The beam type perimeter frame, coupled with the stamped metal swingarm ensure that sportiness is built into the very genes of the motorcycle, giving the rider lots of confidence.

The slipper clutch is one more important feature which is something usually found on premium motorcycles costing a lot more. The dominar is the least expensive motorcycle to have this feature, and it really is a big advantage to have it, especially for those who use engine braking to decelerate.

The Dominar also comes with wide, low-profile tyres which provide great grip, making the already good riding experience, better. The Dominar features a dual-channel ABS system, making it very safe, and the large 320mm disc brake up front further improves braking prowess.

Another important feature of the Dominar is the full-LED headlamp up front. The Dominar is the cheapest motorcycle to feature full-LED headlamps. The Split Reverse LCD display completes the list of important features seen on the Bajaj Dominar 400.

Bajaj Dominar 400 Verdict

Bajaj Dominar 400 Verdict

The Bajaj Dominar is an important motorcycle for the Pune-based motorcycle manufacturer, as it has taken Bajaj to the next level. The Dominar looks good, performs well, is very reliable and at that price, is extremely powerful. The trump card of the Bajaj Dominar 400 of course is its price tag, as there is no other motorcycle within that price bracket, which comes close to it in any of the factors mentioned above.

Bajaj Dominar 400 Q & A

Is the Bajaj Dominar better than the KTM Duke 390?

To a certain extent, yes. The Bajaj Dominar is better than the KTM Duke 390, but only when price is considered. The KTM Duke 390 has many more features than the Dominar, and not to forget, better performance too, but all at an additional cost, of nearly a lakh, and in some states, more than a lakh. When performance is compared, of course, the KTM Duke 390 emerges as the outright winner, but the Dominar is no slouch. The Bajaj Dominar too can hold its own in terms of performance, just falling short by a bit, thanks to the additional weight and reduced power.
