UM Global India Entry In October With Budget Cruiser Motorcycles
American motorcycle manufacturer UM Global will enter the highly competitive Indian two-wheeler mass market in October with budget cruisers, commuters and sporty street motorcycles.
UM Global is a young Miami-based company founded in the year 2000 which, unlike most U.S two wheeler manufacturers, builds low displacement scooters and bikes, including 100cc and 125cc models up to 400cc. Outside the U.S UM Global has a strong presence in the African continent and a few South American countries.
The company has already set up an R&D facility in Delhi where a new 350cc, water-cooled, V-twin engine is being developed, specifically for the Indian market.
UM Global will work in India through a joint venture with a local company, something that is being finalised right now. The two will then set up a manufacturing facility through joint investment. The new facility will initially assemble products, with plans to locally manufacture models in the future.
The Renegade series will be the first to be launched in India in October. This range consists of the 230cc Commando and 200cc Renegade Sport models. The Renegade models will not cost upwards INR 2 lakhs.
This will be followed by the more premium, 300cc to 400cc motorcycles, priced above INR 2 lakhs. The mass market bikes, those in the 100cc to 150cc range, will come last, reports Financial Express.
Um Global will be the first western two wheeler manufacturer that will look to directly challenge the stronghold of local market leaders, namely Hero MotoCorp, Bajaj (including KTM) and Royal Enfield as well as Honda Motorcycles, which combined, currently control the 100cc to 500cc space.
UM Global, along with its joint venture partner, will begin appointing 25 dealers in 15 major cities, starting from July.
