Royal Enfield 400cc Engine Under Development
Royal Enfield is said to be developing a new engine. But do not get too excited just yet because the ‘new' engine is said to be a 400cc unit that will be based on the existing single cylinder 346cc unit that powers the company's entry level motorcycles.
Yet another engine rebore job resulting in more displacement and more power? True, but according to Autocar Professional's source, the new engine will be much more than that.
The story continues in the next section. Click through the slides for more:
Royal Enfield currently powers most of its motorcycles with a single cylinder air cooled 346cc engine and a larger 499cc unit. The new 400cc engine will sit between these two, thus allowing the company to expand its product lineup.
While the 346cc engine develops 20 HP and 28 Nm of torque, the larger 499 cc mill generates 28 HP and 41 Nm of torque. Hence, we can expect the new 400cc engine to produce anywhere between 22 HP to 25 HP power.
While the base price for a 346cc engine powered RE starts at slightly over INR 1 lakhs, the larger 499cc engined motorcycles cost at least about INR 1.5 lakhs. Naturally, new RE motorcycles with the 400cc engine will populate the space in between.
Though the new engine is essentially a larger version of the 346cc unit, the insider source who spoke to Autocar Professional says the modifications are substantial and "requires hard work on the front of new connecting rods, crankshafts and many other crucial areas, to its existing 346cc platform."
Royal Enfield did something similar with its 499cc engine, which resulted in the single-cylinder, 535cc engine that's found in the new Continental GT cafe racer. This engine develops 29 HP.
At the end of it, RE will have four engines on offer and an expanded product lineup, spread across a wider price range, allowing the company to more effectively compete in the crowded premium motorcycle segment.
