Helmets For Delhi Women To Be Made Mandatory
In Delhi, it is not mandatory for women to wear helmets while riding two wheelers. This exemption was brought in after Sikh women protested against it and has since been in effect despite increasing number of deaths of female two-wheeler riders on Delhi roads.
Fresh recommendations by the Delhi Commission for Women and traffic police, however, could see the law being amended that exempts women from the rule that makes helmets compulsory for all.
The Delhi transport department has now reportedly proposed to amend rule 115 of the Act and the same would be sent to the Election Commission for approval. Once approved, the public will be notified about the changed rule and it will come into effect one month after that, reports ET.
The proposal to change the rule comes in the wake of increasing number of female fatalities due to two-wheeler accidents in recent times. As per official data, 63 women died in 2013, up from 42 in 2012.
The notification is likely to be issued only after new government comes into power.
