Racing Engines On Rent - Has Moto3 Gone Mad?
Rule changes to the 2017 season of the Moto 3 states teams can only rent and not buy engines as manufacturers found it was not cost-effective and wanted to protect their technology.
The new rule change for 2017 means Moto3 teams will rent not buy their engines from a manufacturer.
MotoGP Technical Director Danny Aldridge said that for the last two years teams were able to buy their six engines per rider for a fixed price and they would keep those motors. The theory behind it was that teams could then either use the old engines as test engines or sell them on to regional championships.
He added that it worked to some extent as they had some wild-cards enter the championship that was powered by the engines which had been used by full-time teams the previous year.
However, manufacturers found that this sort of arrangement was not cost-effective and was rightly concerned about protecting their technology. Now, teams will have to return the engines to address the manufacturers concern.
The teams now have a 'Moto3 Engine Rental Package' that costs 60,000 euros per rider, which is the same as the previous year. Of this package, the team will get six engines, two throttle bodies and two complete gearboxes. Previously, the team had to buy the gearboxes separately.
By no longer able to sell or test the same engine, teams might find the 60,000 euros unfair. However, Dorna and IRTA are heavily subsidising the cost per package for each team, and this could offset the total costs.
Each engine manufacturer must give out at least two engines to each rider for the first race. Then there is schedule - approved by Danny Aldridge Technical Director - for replacing the engines during the season.
The sporting body will still do the allocation of engines, and everything will go back to random engine allocation system. The first official test of the 2017 Moto3 will begin from March 8-10, 2017 at Jerez.
