Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) in association with M/s Eco Fuel (the Indian partner of Lovato, Italy) have launched a range of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) powered two-wheelers for Mumbai metropolitan region.
MGL has launched 18 CNG powered two-wheelers that are manufactured by various two-wheeler manufacturers which include Honda, TVS, Hero and Yamaha. The launch was graced by the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge), Dharmendra Pradhan along with Vinod Tawde, Honourable Minister for Education, Youth, Sports and Cultural Affairs and Guardian Minister of Mumbai.
Commenting on the occasion, Dharmendra Pradhan said that the launch of CNG two-wheelers will give an opportunity to more than 36 lakh vehicles in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) to opt for this eco-friendly fuel. In the last few years, CNG-powered vehicles have grown in MMR at a Cumulative Average Growth Rate (CAGR) of 70 percent given the fuel economics and eco-friendly nature of CNG.
The minister also launched an e-wallet payment facility which can be used at the time of filling CNG.
The two-wheeler CNG kit includes two cylinders of 1.2kg each, and the CNG-fueled two-wheeler is estimated to travel 120 to 130km per kg. This translates to Rs 0.60 per kilometre for a single fill and is economical compared to a similar petrol-powered two-wheeler.
Initially, the two-wheelers will be retro-fitted with a CNG kit manufactured by Lovato. The kits are being manufactured by ITUK and Lovato and they have received approval from ARAI, Pune and ICAT Gurgaon respectively for their kits.
Considering the huge potential of this segment, other manufacturers of CNG kits are also planning to enter this market.
