India Becomes World's Largest Two-Wheeler Market
India has overtaken China to become No. 1 two-wheeler market in the world. India sold over 17 million two-wheelers in 2016-17.
India became the world's largest two-wheeler market overtaking China. India sold over 17 million units of two-wheelers in 2016-17 as per data from Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).
China was able to sell 16.8 million two-wheelers slipping from the No. 1 slot in the world. India's two-wheeler growth was aided by sales of scooters which accounted 5 million units of the 17 million sold. Commuter motorcycles in the 100-110cc segment accounted close to 6.5 million units.
China's domestic motorcycle market has been dwindling in the recent years due to a ban of motorcycles in many urban areas. The Chinese motorcycle market reached 27 million in 2010, but then it gradually declined over the next four years.
India's two-wheeler market has been increasing over the last four years. While it sold 13 million two-wheelers in 2011-12, it rose to 16 million in 2014-15 with 17 million in 2016-17.
The downward trend in China is attributed to the highly regulated and import barriers in the Chinese domestic market. Also, close to 200 municipalities and cities have banned motorcycles entirely from their downtown areas.
Additionally, cheaper Chinese cars have taken precedent over two-wheelers. In India, the two-wheeler market is on the rise, thanks to the increase in spending power as well as without any restrictions, unlike China.
