Honda And Yamaha To Challenge Unreasonable Scooter Cartel Verdict — We're Rivals Not Partners
Two-wheeler manufacturing giants Honda and Yamaha are fined for engaging in cartel practice in sales of automatic scooters 110c and 125cc.
Indonesian two-wheeler manufacturing giants PT Yamaha Indonesia Motor Manufacturing (YIMM) and PT Astra Honda Motor (AHM) are fined for engaging in cartel practice in sales of automatic scooters.
The Commission for the Supervision of Business Competition (KPPU) has fined Yamaha and Honda Rp25 billion (Approximately Rs 12.53 crore) and Rp22.5 billion (Approximately Rs 11.27 crore) respectively.
Chief Judge Tresna Priyana Soemardi said, "The KPPU panel of judges fine Yamaha Rp25 billion and Honda Rp22.5 billion for violations in business competition."
The KPPU panel of judges found that Honda hiked the prices three times, whereas Yamaha increased the prices five times, which is a violation in business competition.
Although, Honda and Yamaha are challenging the verdict and will file an appeal. The defence lawyer of Yamaha stated that, the basis on which the panel of judges made their judgment was unreasonable.
Honda Motor's General Manager of Corporate Secretary and Legal, Andi Hartanto said, There is still an option to file an appeal up to the Constitutional Court." He also denied forming a cartel with Yamaha.
According to Hartanto Honda and Yamaha are competing very hard in the international market and motorsports. So there is no point in forming a false cartel with the rival manufacturer.
