Honda Dio Enters Top 10 Selling Two-Wheelers In India For The First Time
During May 2017, scooters have performed well compared to motorcycles as per statistics by industry body SIAM.
The two-wheeler segment is the leader in the automobile market in India. The growth of two-wheelers in India is attributed to a growing middle class and young population.
During May 2017, scooters have performed well compared to motorcycles as per statistics by industry body SIAM. And the current competition is between automatic scooters and the 100-110cc mass market motorcycles with similar engine capacity.
As per SIAM, scooters grew 24.67 percent compared to 4.04 percent of motorcycles. This is reflected in the top 10 selling two-wheelers for the month of May 2017.
While Honda Activa continues to hold top honours for the month, TVS Jupiter has climbed position from tenth in May 2016 to the eighth spot in May 2017, displacing Bajaj CT and pushing CT out of the top 10 list.
The significant milestone on the top 10 selling two-wheelers in India is the rise of Honda Dio. The moto-scooter from the Japanese automaker has broken into the top 10 list for the first time since it was launched six years ago in 2003.
The reasons are attributed to better road infrastructure and more women joining the workforce. The primary requirement of riders has now moved from just looking at mileage and price available in 110cc motorcycles to more trendy and unisex automatic scooters.
The automatic scooters in the domestic market grew 35 percent in six years, while motorcycles have declined from 49 percent to 36 percent over the same period.
Automatic scooter sales was mainly an urban wonder, but that has changed with rural areas preferring scooters over motorcycles, this is primarily due to rising number of women professionals opting for scooters.
The Honda Dio is powered by a 109.19cc single cylinder engine which produces 8bhp and 8.91Nm of torque paired to a V-Matic automatic gearbox.
The BS-IV 2017 Honda Dio was recently launched with upgrades such as LED position lights which act as an AHO, 18-litres under seat storage, which also houses a mobile charger, tubeless tyres, Combi Brake System (CBS), and most of all come with stylish dual-tone colours.
DriveSpark Thinks!
The Honda Dio was once considered as a scooter for the men, but with the recent change in industrialisation and more women joining the workforce, there has been a significant shift in preferences. The Honda Dio is a stylish and easy-to-ride scooter which you might consider when buying an automatic scooter.
