Ducati Introduces Radical New ‘Hammerhead’ Aero Fairing
The Ducati front fairing has a narrow central section at the front and huge, wide open nostril on either side.
Ducati has debuted its radical new MotoGP fairing during the second day of the pre-season testing at Qatar. The new front fairing, which is designed to compensate for the banned aerodynamic winglets, was tested by Andrea Dovizioso on Saturday.
The Ducati front fairing has a narrow central section at the front and huge, wide open nostril on either side. The Italian team pioneered the winglet concept in 2015, but last year new rules were introduced to ban external winglets.
According to the new rule, aerodynamic "devices or shapes" can no longer protrude from the fairing and must be "integrated into the body streamlining."
After testing the new fairing, Dovizioso said, "In the evening I did a couple of exits with the new fairing: in my opinion, our engineers have done a great job because it wasn't easy to create a positive aerodynamic downforce without using the winglets.
"Now we are weighing up the pros and cons before we take a decision and also work out the tracks where this solution can give the biggest advantages."
Yamaha was the first team to introduce the new concealed winglet fairing in Sepang, followed by Suzuki and Aprilia in the second test of 2017 at Phillip Island. During the first day of the Qatar test, Honda also tested a modified fairing.
