All-Electric MotoGP Support Class To Kick-Off In 2019

MotoGP is set for an all-electric racing series which will kick-off in 2019. Dorna Sports confirmed the plan. The race will last for 10 laps.

MotoGP is set for an all-electric support class which will kick-start from 2019. Dorna Sports CEO, Carmelo Ezpeleta confirmed the plans of an electric racing series.

Electric motorcycle racing is yet to kick-off as opposed to the growth of four wheel racing. The FIA Formula E Championship has been a success. The Isle Of Man TT also held an electric race since 2010 as part of its program.

Dorna Sports plans to have an electric racing series as a support class for MotoGP in as many as five rounds in 2019. Four manufacturers have offered motorcycles for the 18 bike grid.

The electric bikes are expected to reach speeds of around 200km/h. Slightly slower than the current Moto3-spec bikes. The electric race will last for around ten laps.

The plan also suggests that independent MotoGP teams and leading Moto2 teams will be offered grid slots if they agree to participate. Speaking to Motorsport.com, Ezpeleta said, "The project is very advanced."

He added, "It's most likely that in 2019 we will have several support races [for MotoGP] in Europe. We already have four offers from brands on the table. It will be one-make, with all bikes the same, and the races will be a minimum of 10 laps long."

Ezpeleta plans to use solar panels to charge the batteries as opposed to carbon-neutral glycerine generators used in Formula E racing series. Ezpeleta added, "We want the batteries to be recharged from solar panels, not from generators like in other championships."
