Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer Yamaha's new iteration of the middleweight sports bike, the R6 borrows design cues and technology from its elder sibling, the R1. The motorcycle gets fresh new look and host of electronics. So, here are the eight things you didn't know about the 2017 R6.
8. The New Engine Is Identical As The Last One
Yes, the 2017 Yamaha R6 gets the same engine and also has the same frame as well. Its unusual for a new model to have the same engine. Not even minor tweaks are done to the engine, instead, the company opted for the same motor.
7. Six-Figures Sales Since Its Launch
The first-generation Yamaha R6 was launched back in 1999, and the company has sold nearly 1,53,000 motorcycles in the US market. The sales numbers bump to 3,89,000 in the global market.
6. Dominated The Race Track
The Yamaha R6 has dominated the race grids across the globe with its excellent platform. A lot of development work has been done on the motorcycle to reach such level. In US alone out of 58 Supersport and Superstock 600 races, R6 has won 56 of them.
5. The New R6 Is More Agile
Yamaha engineers have focussed on the handling of the motorcycle than the engine. The 2017 R6 has a 25mm axle a 3mm larger than the previous model. But the rigidity with the 43mm front forks was too much. So, the engineers lowered the triple clamp to compensate the effect.
4. The 2017 R6 Loses Some Weight
The biggest enemy of a supersport motorcycle is the weight. So, the engineers at Yamaha have changed the fuel tank by manufacturing it with aluminium. But the capacity of the tank remains the same.
3. 2017 R6 Gets Bigger Brakes And ABS
The new R6 gets more stopping power with 320mm discs up front. The fluid is sent to the discs by a Nissin master cylinder. The interesting fact is that the ABS is always on and there is no option to shut it off.
2. Lighter Tyres
The weight reduction on the new R6 is also achieved by lighter tyres as well. Bridgestone has fitted the S21 tyre on the R6 which is 800 grams lighter than the normal S21 tyre.
1. Yamaha America Took The Lead To Design The Motorcycle
Yamaha America took the lead to design the new R6. The American unit of the Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer received feedback from the US customers. But surprisingly, the customers did not like the new design as it was too boring.
