Yamaha Working On USD 500 Motorcycle
During the launch of the upgraded Yamaha FZ yesterday, Yamaha dropped a bombshell. The company is working on a project to create a low-cost motorcycle for the Indian market that will sell at around USD 500 (approx. INR 30,000).
There was however, no timeframe given for the launch of the new bike. "The project is on. At this time we are not sure if the end product will cost $500, less or more. But we are working on the project keeping $500 as the benchmark price," Yamaha Motor R&D India managing director Toshikazu Kobayashi said.
When asked about whether the new bike would be sold in overseas markets, Yamaha Motor India Sales CEO and Managing Director Asano Masaki replied: "It is too early to comment as we don't know when it will be out but would like to add that India would be the first market for the product."

If indeed Yamaha do manage create a reliable, no-nonsense bike that undercuts rivals with a final price close to INR 30,000, it could prove to be a very successful move by the Japanese manufacturer.
Then again, the Indian customer is tough to predict, as was the case with the one-lakh Nano, which did not wow the Indian audience as expected in the passenger car segment, despite its low price. Only time will tell.
