MotoGP Speed To Be Restricted
MotoGP currently use a 1000cc engine producing enormous amount of power and torque. The bikes can easily hit top speeds in excess of 360 km/h. To help stopping these fast machines MotoGP has allowed riders to use bigger disc brakes provided by Brembo.
Now governing body for MotoGP, Dorna believes these type of top speeds are a bit too dangerous for the rider. MotoGP wants to make the sport as safe as possible without making it boring. They recently announced airbag suits for riders as compulsory.
Dorna believes the speed on MotoGP bikes need to be restricted and they plan to introduce rev limiters. They intend to restrict the bike's RPM to a maximum of 16,000 RPM.

The problem is as the speed of bikes increase and if a rider has an accident the inertia will take him longer to stop, meaning more run-off area. Most tracks on the calendar cannot be expanded any further as they have no room to grow.
The current MotoGP Paddock believes with the introduction of rev limiters, the competition level will not change. The riders will find a way to be on the limit and keep pushing as close as they can to the restrictor.
Recently there has been introduction of several safety features for the motorcycles and some believe this is going to kill the sport eventually. MotoGP will have to come up with a balance to please the viewers as well as the participants. We would like the riders to judge if adding a rev limiter is the right way ahead or not.
