Bosch Low Cost Fuel Injection Unit For Motorcycles
India is home to one of the world's largest number of low displacement commuter motorcycles and automatic scooters. However, manufacturer continue to equip these two wheelers with carburettors to supply fuel to the engine.
Fuel injection systems offer higher fuel efficiency, reduce emission, easier serviceability and increase performance, by delivering the precise amount of fuel. At the same time, they cost more than carburettors, which is the reason why they are only used in cars and relatively more expensive motorcycles.
So, it would be no short of a revolution if somehow fuel injection systems are introduced in all two wheelers. Something that could become a reality if their cost comes down.
Bosch, which is working on developing low cost auto components for Asian markets, could bring about that change, thanks to its new electronically controlled, low-cost fuel injection system.
Designed for single-cylinder, low displacement two wheeler engines, this fuel injection system will cost almost as less as carburettors.
In addition, this fuel injection unit can be connected to a smartphone through a dedicated app. The app will gather and display data such as fuel efficiency and trim information, but more importantly, the app will allow the user to disengage the fuel injection system, which will effectively function as an anti-theft system.
Bosch has developed this low-cost system for Asian markets, which are witnessing double digit growth in two wheeler sales, especially India, which are also cost sensitive markets.
"In Asia, it is this smartphone connectivity that - perhaps even more than emissions regulations - provides the impetus for our electronic fuel injection systems," says Dr. Rolf Bulander, whose responsibilities as a member of the Robert Bosch GmbH board of management include powertrain technology.
