2014 MotoGP Phillip Island Qualifying Result
This Sunday MotoGP will be held at Phillip Island in Australia. The race weekend began with MotoGP legends from Australia Casey Stoner, Mick Doohan and Wayne Gardner being felicitated. Their bronze statues were erected at their corners around the track.
Repsol Honda this weekend struggled in the initial stages of practice. Dani Pedrosa had to fight his way from Q1 to participate in Q2. The Spaniard somehow made it into the next round of qualification. His teammate and winner of 2014 Championship Marc Marquez also struggled to find pace.
The Yamaha motorcycles looked comfortable around the circuit and dominated most practice sessions. Ducati team had provided riders Andrea Dovizioso and Andrea Iannone with their GP14 motorcycles to achieve more data, along with a better result this weekend.
The qualifying session commenced and every rider was fighting for the front row of the grid. Open class rider Alexis Espargaro rode well and was fighting for top honours, he had the advantage of the softest tyre option and pushed his motorcycle to its maximum.
In the end Marc Marquez secure the fastest lap time around Phillip Island and has equalled Casey Stoner for the most pole positions in a single season. The youngest double World Champion has secured 12 pole positions this year and could break the Australians record with two more races to go.
Surprisingly Ducati was among the top three and it was Cal Crutchlow on his old machine. Teammate Andrea Dovizioso could only achieve the tenth fastest time with Iannone finishing higher up in seventh position. Crutchlow will be leaving Ducati to ride for LCR Honda next year.
Movistar Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo was third fastest , while teammate Valentino Rossi struggled and could only achieve eight fastest time. Satellite Yamaha rider Bradley Smith will begin the race from fourth place, with team mate Pol Espargaro down in ninth position.
The race tomorrow is scheduled to commence at 10:30 am IST. It will be an interesting race with Marc Marquez riding without any pressure. Expect a tremendous fight between Jorge Lorenzo, Dani Pedrosa and Valentino Rossi as they fight for second place in the Championship.
