Team Hero EBR World Superbike Championship Entry In 2014

By Ganesh

Here is a shocker. Hero MotoCorp will become the first Indian two wheeler manufacturer to take part in the World Superbike Championship (WSBK), during the 2014 season. Though it will be proud moment for India, we still can't seem to grasp the fact that Hero, the manufacturer of high mileage commuter bikes such as the Splendor will be officially be a part of ultimate superbike racing championship. Ultimately, we have to believe it as its true.

Named, Team Hero EBR, the team will be run by team owner Claudio Quintarelli and team manager Giulio Bardi. The team will use a pair of EBR 1190RX superbikes to compete in the 2014 season WSBK, with Geoff May and Aaron Yates appointed as the official riders.

Both May and Yates are seasoned racers, having raced for EBR at the AMA Superbike series, while the EBR 1190RX is undoubtedly a capable racing machine. However, the team has set realistic targets. Erik Buell, founder, EBR Motorcycles and a former racer himself has stated that they are not expecting podium finishes right away, but will rather take the opportunity to learn and improve. Also considering that winter testing has been banned, Team Hero EBR will have to wait until later to access their capabilities and shortcomings.

The 2014 season of WSBK will begin on Feb 4 in Malaysia at Sepang.

Mr. Pawan Munjal, Managing Director & CEO, Hero MotoCorp Ltd commented on the matter: "We are delighted to be partnering with EBR at the Superbike World Championship this year. Hero is the first Indian two-wheeler brand to be associated with this event and this is also the debut year for Team Hero EBR at the series. This is in perfect sync with brand Hero's fast-paced global expansion into new international markets. I am sure it is going to be a lot of fun and we do look forward to some exciting times at the championships this year."

Javier Alonso, WSBK Executive Director commented: "It is a great pleasure for WSBK to welcome an attractive and unique brand like EBR to the series. The American Manufacturer is the eighth different brand to compete in this new and challenging edition of the Championship, and we are equally confident that their involvement will add to the show. It is really good to have two American riders on the starting grid again representing a strong nationality in the history of the series.
