Bajaj Auto is silently working on launching a low cost 100cc variant of its Boxer commuter bike in the coming months. The new motorcycle expected to be named as the Boxer BM 100 has been seen on a highway near Pune triggering speculations about its launch.
The new Bajaj Boxer BM 100 is expected to be a low cost bike with the focus on delivering good mileage. The more powerful Boxer 150 has not been as successful as expected and Bajaj has reverted to the tried and tested formula of building a rugged light bike that offers a high mileage.
The Boxer when it was first launched in India was considered as a durable and low cost bike. It was phased out when Bajaj started building its Pulsar and Discover brand of motorcycles. The Boxer made a comeback last year in the form of the Boxer BM 150. Its price of under Rs.50,000 was attractive but its 150cc engine did not deliver the kind of mileage that the Boxer's target buyers expected.
The Boxer is essentially a motorcycle designed for the rural public who travel across rough and difficult terrains. The new Boxer BM 100 is expected to satisfy the needs of such buyers.
The Bajaj Boxer's comeback is an important development as people prefer motorcycles with high fuel efficiency and low price. The recent launches of entry level motorcycles such as the Honda Dream Yuga and The Suzuki Hayate indicate the increasing demand from such bikes. The new Boxer is expected to deliver a mileage of more than 70kmpl.
The most important aspect about the new Bajaj Boxer BM 100 however will be its price. The Boxer 100 price is expected to be under Rs.40,000 making it the cheapest bike from Bajaj Auto. The Boxer's low price coupled with its high mileage will make it an attractive motorcycle for not only rural buyers but city riders too. The only disadvantage about the Boxer is its design which is not as attractive as the current crop of motorcycles.
