The World's Most Congested Cities
In the recent world, commuting is a challenge. The growing economy has multiplied the number of vehicles on road compared to the past. This results in too many vehicles heading towards the same direction, and in turn - traffic jams.
In a recent study done by the Amsterdam-based navigation device manufacturer, TomTom, a survey of 180 cities across the globe revealed a few interesting facts.
According to their study, Moscow stands first in terms of being the most congested city in the world. An average commuter during peak hours of traffic suffers 76 minutes of delay per hour! In simple words, it will take a little more than two hours to get to a point that is an hour away.
As per the data provided by TomTom, an average commuter during peak hours spends 8 days of his life stuck in traffic as per their annual global traffic index.

Avoiding the main road and taking a shortcut or a secondary route will seem to be very good idea, but studies say your chances of getting to a point via the main road is quicker comparatively because this is the first thing that will occur to the others as well.
Methods like building new roads and widening existing roads are not going to work, says Harold Goddijn, CEO, TomTom. By providing real time traffic data, TomTom say they can help the government reduce traffic congestion or smoothen the vehicle flow.
A GPS that has real time traffic can also help individuals take an alternate route so they can save time as well.
Here is the list of top 10 cities with the most traffic:
- Moscow, Russia
- Istanbul, Turkey
- Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
- Mexico City, Mexico
- São Paulo, Brazil
- Palermo, Italy
- Warsaw, Poland
- Rome, Italy
