France has opened what it claims to be the world's first ever solar panel road in the small village of Tourouvre-au-Perche, in the province of Normandy. The solar panel road which stretches for one kilometre is called Wattway.
Wattway cost €5 million (Rs 35.43 crore) to build and will play host to 2,800 square metres of electricity-generating panels. The solar panel road was inaugurated by French Environment minister Segolene Royal.
France expects 2,000 motorists to use Wattway every day and the solar panels will be tested out for a period of two years to see if they can generate enough electricity to run the to power street lighting in the village of 3,400 residents.
However, the French province of Normandy is not known for its sunny weather and we do want to know what the French government was thinking when they have a perfectly viable option in its south where all the touristy type come to get a tan.
Let's just hope that a traffic jam doesn't occur on the road as that would most certainly mean no lights in the night,
