A woman, reportedly talking over her cell phone, mows down five pedestrians in Pune, Maharashtra, killing one instantly. The incident took place on Monday afternoon, and a CCTV camera has managed to capture the chilling accident.
The victims of the accident were Pooja (24), Sajid Shaikh (4), Shaijad Shaikh (30), Nisha Shaikh (25), and Isha (3). The three-year-old girl (Isha) lost her life instantly, while Pooja succumbed to her injuries, later in the hospital.
The driver was identified as Sujata Jayprakash Shroff, the Director of Shroff Group, a construction company. Bystanders and eyewitnesses say that Sujata was driving while speaking on her cellphone. Sujata was arrested but was released on bail one hour later.
The police have registered a FIR and booked her for rash driving, and causing death and serious injury due to negligence, while Sujata claims that she felt dizzy and thus lost control of the car. Police are awaiting call details to find out if the woman driver was, in fact, speaking over a phone or not.
