Uber Launches Real-Time ID Check For Drivers — Selfie For Safety
The Real-Time ID check feature prompts drivers to share a selfie before going online to help ensure that the driver using the app resembles the account that is there on Uber.
Bolstering its stand on providing security, Uber has launched a "Realtime ID check" in India to ensure the driver using the app matches the description that the ride-hailing app has in its records.
The "Real-Time ID check" feature urges the driver to share a selfie, before logging in into the Uber platform. The Uber driver app has been updated with the new feature, which now regularly directs the drivers to click and submit selfies before they take a new ride.
The presented image is then matched to the photo of the driver in Uber's records, using Microsoft's Cognitive Services.
If the pictures match, the driver can carry on with his ride. If not, Uber will momentarily block the account and seek further clarification from the registered driver.
The ride-hailing service provider has insisted that this new feature will not only improve the safety of Uber customers but will also ensure that the drivers' accounts aren't being compromised.
Currently, this new feature has been launched in five cities - New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Kolkata. More cities will be added to the list shortly.
