Top 10 Longest National Highways In India
The Indian National Highway system is a complex system of roads that connects every major city in India. Not just major cities but it also run across the length and breadth of our country. This road system measures over 92,851.05 km and is growing day by day.
Now, since keeping track of them becomes a task, they are numbered for easy reference. Most of this highway network is maintained by the National Highway Authority Of India (NHAI), which operates under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
In 2010, according to a survey, the national highway is just 2% of the total road network in India and yet carries 40% of the total traffic. So if one is wondering, which is the longest highway, here are the top 10 longest highways in India:
10. NH 31
At number 10 comes NH 31. Being 1,125 km long, it starts in Barhi, Jharkhand and ends in Jalukbari, Guwahati. It runs through Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Assam. A section of this highway comes under the East-West Corridor.

9. NH 3
Number 9 is NH 3 or the AB road. Connecting Agra and Mumbai, it is 1,190 km long. The stretch between Agra and Gwalior comes under the North-South corridor. NH 3 towards Mumbai is known as the Eastern Express Highway and also called the Mumbai Nashik Expressway after Mumbai.

8. NH 4
The NH 4 is a major highway as it links four out of the ten most populated cities in India. It spans 1,235 km. It connects Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore and Chennai. It passes through Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

7. NH 17
The NH 17 runs north to south along the west coast of India and parallel to the Western Ghats. It connects Panvel in Maharashtra and Cochin in Kerala. This highway is also one of the most scenic of the lot. Spanning a distance of 1,269 km, it runs through Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and Kerala. People along this highway speak 6 different languages.

6. NH 8
Travelling a distance of 1,428 km, it connects two major cities, the capital city Delhi and Mumbai. It also connects Gurgaon, Ajmer, Udaipur, Ahmedabad, Surat, Jaipur and Vadodara. This highway is also part of the Golden Quadrilateral Project.

5. NH 2
NH 2 or Delhi-Kolkata Road is one of the busiest roads in India. Spanning 1,465 km, it passes through Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal. This road is also part of the Asian Road Network, AH 1. There are 34 cities on and off this highway.

4. NH 15
The NH 15 connects Samakhiali in Gujarat with Pathankot in Punjab. It travels a length of 1,526 km. This highway travels through Punjab, Gujarat and Rajasthan.

The NH 5 is a major highway on the east coast of India. Spanning 1,533 km, it runs across Orissa, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. It originates in Jharpokharia in Odisha and ends in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The NH 5 is part of the Golden Quadrilateral project.

Spanning a distance of 1,949 km, NH 6 is the second longest highway in India. This very busy road, runs west to east, starting from Hajira in Gujarat to Kolkata in West Bengal. The NH 6 runs through Gujarat, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Jharkhand and West Bengal.

Running 2,369 km and connecting 21 important cities, NH 7 is the longest National Highway in India. This Highway is laid and maintained by the Central Public Works Department. It starts from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh and ends almost in the southern-most tip of India- Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu. The longest highway in India runs through Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
