The Hyundai Creta has proved to be a rather popular SUV since its launch almost one year back. Despite the best efforts of Hyundai, the waiting period for the SUV has only come down to two months from the previous eight month waiting time.
The rather high demand for the car and the long waiting period has unfortunately resulted in the SUV becoming a favorite targets of thieves.
This rather unfortunate popularity of the Creta was made quite obvious to a Hyundai dealer in Chennai whose showroom's yard is located at Manapakkam near the International airport.
A gang of thieves first pelted the yard's gate with stones at around 4 a.m. to draw the attention of the guard who was overpowered as soon as he opened the gates.
The gang then strolled in and left with 7 Cretas which were kept with the keys on the door and a topped up with fuel.
The thieves abandoned five cars at Gangai Amman Koil Street in Valasaravakkam three hours later when cops came across them trying to fit the stolen cars with fake number plates.
The Chennai police though couldn't find the remaining Cretas but are confident of nabbing the gang as they suspect the heist was an inside job.
