Speaking about the industry, how many people out there know which company is the biggest of the lot or how much can their fleet carry or transport? Here we bring you the 10 biggest shipping companies in the world, based on their TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) or their weight carrying capacity.

For example, if a shipping company says it has a TEU of 500,000, it means the entire fleet put together has a capacity of 500,000 containers. Each container measures 20 feet long, 8 feet wide and 9 feet high.

10. MOL
MOL (Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd.) is the 10th largest shipping company in the world. The Japanese company, headquartered in Tokyo, is mainly into international shipping. Founded in the year 1886, they have a TEU of 507,988. The company also has coastal liners, cruise ships, and ferries.

9. CSCL
The China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL) is based in Shanghai, China. Founded in the year 1997, the company has a TEU of 565,567. The shipping company operates in Asia, Australia, Europe, Mediterranean, North America, South America, Persian Gulf and South Africa.

8. Hanjin Shipping Company
This Korean company is Korea's largest shipping company as well as the world's eighth biggest. Founded in 1977, the fleet has a TEU of 579,840. The company transports more than 100 million tons of cargo annually.

The American President Lines is the world's seventh largest shipping company in the world. The company provides more than 80 weekly services and was founded in 1848. Headquartered in Singapore, it has a TEU of 589,924.

6. Hapag-Lloyd
At number 6 is the German company, Hapag-Lloyd. Founded in 1970 as a merger of two 19th century companies, it has its headquarters in Hamburg Germany. The fleet has a TEU of 632,348.

5. COSCO
At number 5 is another Chinese company named China Ocean Shipping (Group) Company. Headquartered in Beijing, it has a TEU of 715,266. This company is the largest dry bulk carriers in China and one of the largest in the world also. The company was founded in 1961.

4. Evergreen Line
Founded in the year 1968 and headquartered in Taiwan, they call on 240 ports world wide and 80 countries, they are the fourth biggest shipping company in the world. They have a TEU of 720,893. East Asia to North America and Central America is this company's busiest route.

3. CMA CGM
At number three is the French company CMA CGM. Headquartered in Marseille, France and lead by Jacques Saade, operates in 400 ports and 150 different countries worldwide. It was founded in 1978. CMA CGM has a TEU of 1,398,216 which makes them the third largest shipping company in the world.

2. Mediterranean Shipping Company
The Mediterranean Shipping Company is the world's second largest. Having their headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland; it was founded in the year 1970. This Geneva based Italian company operates in almost every major port in the world. Lloyds Loading List has named this line as shipping line of the year in 2007 for the sixth time in eleven years. They have a TEU of 2,245,342.

At number one is the A.P. Moller-Maersk Group. Founded in the year 1904 in Copenhagen, Denmark, they have a gigantic fleet of over 600 vessels. They became the biggest company in 1996 and stayed on top ever since. This Danish company owns the largest container ship in the world - Emma Maersk. It has a TEU of 2,589,905.
