#IPLturns10 — IPL Team Owners And Their Cars
#IPLturns10. Here’s the list of IPL team owners and the cars owned by them. One team owner even owns a Bugatti Veyron.
When 'IPL' and 'Cars' are usually put together, one will connect to the cars owned by IPL players. Players own fancy cars, yes, but so do the IPL team owners. Here's a quick fact sheet about IPL team owners and what they drive.
Delhi Daredevils
Team Delhi Daredevils was founded in 2008 and was bought for $84 million by GM Rao, the founder of GMR Group. The 66-year-old owner is a billionaire industrialist and a global infrastructure developer. Despite his high profile status, GM Rao drives around in a Toyota Camry.
The Toyota Camry has been a consistent seller for Toyota globally, and the latest car features hybrid technology with the help of a 2.5-litre petrol engine that makes 202bhp and 213Nm of torque. Now that's a great way to keep a low profile, and GM Rao has always kept.
Kings XI Punjab
Team Kings XI Punjab, abbreviated as KXIP, is jointly owned by Bollywood star Preity Zinta and the team was bought for a sum of $76 million. Preity has starred in many Bollywood films and drives around in a Lexus LX470.
The Lexus LX470 is a full-size SUV and as the name depicts, ‘LX' stands for ‘Luxury Crossover'. The LX470 has been in production since 1995 and is even sold as the Toyota Land Cruiser in some parts of the world.
Kolkata Knight Riders
The Kolkata Knight Riders, representing Kolkata is co-owned by Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan. The team was founded in 2008, and the owners had to shell out $75.09 million for the team. The team struggled during the first three years but did manage to win the tournament in 2012.
‘King Khan', as he is known, has a soft spot for cars and one of his prized, if not the most prized car in his collection is rumoured to be the Bugatti Veyron. The once fastest production car needs no introduction, as the Veyron is powered by an 8.0-litre W16 engine capable of producing 1000bhp.
Another notable car owned by Shah Rukh Khan is the BMW i8, a hybrid sportscar owned by a handful of people in India. The BMW i8 makes use of an electric motor that powers the front wheels and a 1.5-litre petrol engine that drives the rear. The car produces a combined power of 357bhp.
Shah Rukh Khan's automobile collection is not limited to fancy sports cars alone, but also includes a luxury bus specced out by DC Design. King Khan shelled out over Rs 3 crore for the bus.
Mumbai Indians
The Mumbai Indians is well known for two reasons - Sachin was part of the team, and for Ambani - who owns the team. The team was bought for $111.9 million, making it the most expensive IPL team.
Ambani, the team owner, has a collection of cars and the most noticeable one is the Mercedes-Maybach S600 Guard, an armour-plated car with the highest level of ballistic protection available for civilians. The S600 Guard is powered by a 6.0-litre V12 engine that makes 530bhp and 830Nm of torque.
Royal Challengers Bangalore
The Royal Challengers Bangalore is the second most expensive IPL team that cost United Spirits $111.6 million. When spoken about Royal Challengers Bangalore or RCB, the notable person that comes to one's mind is Vijay Mallya.
Vijay Mallya has numerous cars, ranging from classics to one-off race cars. One of the most interesting cars owned by Mallya is the Ferrari 275 GTB, the first Ferrari with a transaxle. Considered one of the greatest Ferraris of all time, the 275 GTB hides away a 3.3-litre V12 engine under the hood that produces 280bhp.
Another rare car sheltered in Mallya's garage is a 1966 Ferrari 365 California Spider, one of just 14 models ever built, making it a rare Ferrari. Powering the California Spider is a 4.4-litre V12 engine and the car was first debuted during the 1966 Geneva Motor Show.
One of the sports cars among Mallya's numerous car collection is the f5000. These cars were raced between 1968 to 1982 and the ‘5000' denotes the 5.0-litre engine capacity that was allowed during the time. The car makes around 500bhp with the help of a V8 engine.
Sunrisers Hyderabad
Sunrisers Hyderabad is a owned by Kalanidhi Maran, a famous media baron and the Chairman of Sun Group. He owns television channels, newspapers, weeklies, radio stations, DTH services, and a movie production house amongst other.
Kalanidhi Maran is also known for his classic car collection, and one of the noticeable vehicles owned by him is a Lamborghini Murciélago finished in yellow. The Murciélago was in production from 2001 to 2010 and was Lamborghini's flagship model that has a V12 under its hood.
Rising Pune Supergiant
Rising Pune Supergiant is one of the newest teams in IPL and is owned by the Sanjiv Goenka Group, headed by Sanjiv Goenka himself. The team is based out of Pune, and 2016 was the team's debut match.
Sanjiv Goenka is an avid sports buff and also owns Atletico De Kolkata franchise and a luxury mall in Kolkata.
Gujarat Lions
Gujarat Lions is another new team in IPL, having played the first season in 2016. The young team is owned by one of the youngest entrepreneurs in India, Keshav Bansal. Keshav is the youngest IPL team owner in the history of the tournament and like many others loves cars.
Keshav owns a few high-end cars such as Ferraris, Porsches, and sources even claim he owns a Bugatti. The 26-year-old is also the Director of Intex Technologies, a smartphone manufacturing company.
