BMW And GoPro To Offer In-Car Control For Camera

BMW car owners will now be able to use their cars onboard infotainment system to control a GoPro camera. The in-car app will allow owners to start and stop the camera, and use a number of modes including Leisure Drive Facing Out, Night Driving, Sport Drive Facing Out, Drive Camera Facing In, Winding Road Time-lapse, and Straight Road Time-lapse.

"Working with GoPro to design this integration was remarkable," says Phil Johnston, Head of BMW Group AppCenter USA. "'Creative' and 'insightful' just begin to describe the experience. GoPro is a natural fit for BMW enthusiast drivers. The power and flexibility of the BMW Group App Integration Platform coupled with GoPro's advanced camera technology brings new, safe, and engaging experiences to the enthusiasts that were previously not possible. When the camera is connected to the car, it allows GoPro's app to present context-appropriate presets that allow the enthusiast to capture the perfect shot."

BMW owners that possess a 2012 model or later will be able to download the new app in July on to an iPhone, and connect it to the car. The camera will need Wi-fi capability to allow access from the car's infotainment system.

This new system makes it much easier for BMW owners to make great in-car videos without needing to fiddle around with a smartphone while driving. All one needs to do is click the iDrive controller button once to start and stop the recording without needing to look at the screen. Good news if you're doing 250 km/h...
