Tata Motors To Build Electric Car Worth Rs.10L!

Tata Motors, one of the leading Indian vehicle manufacturer more famous globally for building the world's cheapest car Nano is reportedly planning to develop a new electric car. Tata Motors electric car will be a joint venture with France based Dassualt Systemes.

Tata Group's engineering services outsourcing and product development IT services arm, Tata Technologies has been working with Dassault Systemes and has already conducted a feasibility study. Tata Technologies in its statement has stated that it is aiming to keep the cost of the electric car under $20,000 (Rs.10 Lakhs).

There is no clarity about this electric car being based n Tata Motors' electric car concept named as the eMO. The eMo is Tata Motors' first electric vehicle jointly developed by Dassault Systemes. Tata Motors has stated that one of the primary challenge of building an electric car was to place all the vehicle systems within a small area and still maintain sufficient space for the car's four occupants.

While this electric car project is being spear headed by Tata Technologies, Tata Motors has already announced plans to build an electric version of its hatchback Indica. Tata Motors is working with a Norway based firm and had planned to bring the electric Indica to the car market by the end of 2011. Tata Motors has not made any statement with regard to the progress of this project.

An electric car from Tata Motors will definitely sound attractive considering the Indian carmaker's ability to build cars at low costs. This same ability has helped in making the Tata Nano the world's cheapest car. If the same expertise is used in building electric cars, there is little doubt about Tata Motors going on to build the world's cheapest electric car too.
