The new Maruti Suzuki Swift that was expected to be launched in India by August has been delayed by the 13 day strike that stopped work at the carmaker's Manesar plant. The strike has lead to huge waiting lists for Maruti's cars, especially the diesel variants. The carmaker is under pressure to reduce the backlog first before it begins production of the new Swift. Reports say the new Suzuki Swift's launch will be delayed by a quarter.
Maruti Suzuki is expecting to suffer a loss of Rs.270 crore due to the loss of production during the strike. Although it is heartening for Maruti Suzuki that there is demand for its cars despite heavy competition, a long waiting list for its cars could drive some customers away. Hence the carmaker has decided to delay the launch of the new Swift.
Maruti Suzuki will launch the new Swift by the end of September. The delay could help the carmaker as this is probably the best possible time to launch the car in India as it precedes the festive season. Car sales during Diwali has always been positive. The new Suzuki Swift's launch could also pose a problem. The Toyota Etios Liva hatchback will be launched on 27th June and Honda is expected to launch the Brios hatchback soon.
With both cars expected to be priced around Rs.4-5 lakhs, The new Suzuki Swift can expect some tough competition. Only time will tell if the Indian car buyer will opt for the new models or prefer the trusted Suzuki swift.
