Compact SUVs: Volkswagen And Nissan Plan To Launch Sub-4 Meter Models

Volkswagen and Nissan are eager to enter the sub-4 meter space in India, and are looking to bring out new compact sedan and compact SUV models. The sub-4 meter category is one the fastest growing segments in the country and can thus not be ignored by these companies.

Of the two companies, Volkswagen is said to be in a more advanced stage of decision making having already moved from a consideration stage to final stage of approval to begin work on the sub-4 meter models, according to ET's insider sources.

Volkswagen has reportedly finalised the project (codenamed VW 251\2) internally and will go on to request for quotations (RFQ) from vendors for components soon.

Nissan, on the other hand, is said to be conducting a market study before it can make a final decision on entering the two segments.

Nissan, which plans to launch 10 new vehicles by 2017, could likely come out with a sub-4 meter version of the Sunny, along with a crossover/compact SUV model. But before it can go ahead the company has to work out the price-value equation.

In case of Volkswagen, we could see the new models roll out by mid-2016, depending on the status of the RFQ.

Of the two manufacturers, the German automaker has been less active in the past several months, having not launched a new product in India after the Cross Polo. A compact SUV from VW, possibly the Taigun, is expected to be the next new product.
