Tesla Confirms BMW 3-Series Rival, Amphibious & Flying Cars
Tesla recently introduced the right-hand driver version of their Model S electric sedan in the U.K. On the sidelines of the launch Tesla owner Elon Musk revealed plans for his company, which includes flying and submarine cars.
First thought, the company will concentrate on launching their second model, the Model X SUV, next year. The Model X would closely resemble the concept and will also feature gullwing doors.
Next in line is a sedan that'll be 20 percent smaller than the Model S and will cost half as much. This smaller electric sedan will be a direct BMW 3 Series rival.
Design and engineering work on the said new sedan would begin by the end of the year and is likely to largely take place in the company's forthcoming R&D facility in the U.K. Estimated launch year for the 3 Series rival is 2017.
Moving on to the more ambitious projects, Musk has revealed that Tesla is considering developing a flying car as well as amphibious one. Musk told British newspaper independent that while a flying car could be built, keeping it silent and safe is the challenge.
An amphibious car, on the other hand, is more likely to become a reality. Musk said that this is a low priority project and a submarine car would be built in single digits. Musk is the owner of the Lotus Esprit submarine car from the James Bond film ‘The Spy Who Loved Me', which he acquired last year for a price of $1 million.
