Nissan Smart Rearview Mirror With Integrated LCD Display Is The Future
A digital display in place of the rear view mirror is a feature that's widely available though not commonly used. That's because the technology is not perfect and still has limitations. But now Nissan has headed out to change that.

Nissan Smart Rearview Mirror is the next generation of rear view mirrors, which it hopes to make mainstream. Showcased at the Geneva Motor Show 2014 for the first time, the Smart Rearview Mirror neatly integrates a traditional mirror with a LCD screen for a far more perfect and practical digital rear view mirror.

Nissan calls the Smart Rearview Mirror the world's first LCD monitor that can switch between digital display and regular rear view mirror.
The images show the difference between regular reflection and LCD display mode.
The LCD display has a unique aspect ratio of 4:1 to perfectly fit the live image fed by a specially developed camera lens mounted on the outside of the rear mirror.
The switch between LCD display and a regular rear view mirror can be done by a simple flip of a switch. Nissan explains how they integrated the LCD monitor and mirror in a single unit.
"When the LCD monitor and mirror are used in unison, the transparency of the monitor and the reflection in the mirror can create an image overlap ─ a dual layered effect-making it difficult to get a clean view, but with the Smart rear view mirror, Nissan applied a unique technology to the structural design of the LCD monitor and the mirror, enabling it to function without any image overlaps."
The camera feed offers several advantages over a regular mirror, including clear view in semi dark conditions, rain, snow and reduced glare from strong light sources.
Additionally, since the camera is located outside the car the view is not obstructed by the c-pillar, rear occupants and luggage piled high in the rear compartment and offers a wider and clear view of regular blindspots.
Nissan will carry out real world trial of its Smart Rearview Mirror for the first time in the ZEOD RC race car during the 24 Hours of Le Mans and other NISMO race cars.
