Maruti Alto 25 Lakh Unit Sales Milestone Reached
Living up to the legacy of its predecessor, the legendary Maruti 800, the Maruti Alto has managed to reach the significant milestone of 25 lakh unit sales 14 years after its launch, making it the fastest selling car brand in India.
Launched in the year 2000, with an 800cc, 3-cylinder petrol engine producing 47 bhp, the company sold 1 lakh units of the hatchback in the first four years. A 1.1-litre, 4-cylinder, 64 bhp engine version of the Alto was launched in 2001, though it was discontinued in 2004.
The litre-class Alto did make a return in 2010 in the form of the Alto K10. Powered by a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder engine producing 67 bhp, this variant has managed to reach the 4 lakh unit sales mark in just 4 years.

Another version of the Alto is the Alto 800 that came in 2012. This version came with a redesigned exterior and interior, along with an improved 800cc engine that delivered more fuel economy.
Maruti claims, 100,000 units of the Alto 800 were sold in a short period of just 4 months. A CNG variant of this model was made available upon launch as well, to help boost sales.
In its nearly 14 years of existence Maruti Alto has also been the world's best selling small car multiple times. In 2011, 2012 and 2013, to be exact.
Going forward, Maruti Alto will get another engine update in the form of the K10 B engine from the Celerio. But perhaps the most important update since launch will come in the form of the Automated Manual Transmission, which will debut in the Alto in January 2015.
