Luxury Buses To Get Black Box, Speed Limiter & Seat Belts Soon
To make high speed luxury bus travel safer authorities have come with a proposal to equip these buses with aircraft style black boxes and seat belts for every seat.
The recent major Volvo bus accidents that ended the lives of dozens of passengers have brought to light the shortcomings and mistakes, which need to be rectified to prevent them from happening again.
To discuss the matter the ministry will hold a meeting in Bangalore this month that will be attended by state transport authorities, and representatives from Volvo and Scania bus manufacturing companies, reports ET

One of the matters that will be discussed will be related to equipping buses with black boxes that will record how fast and for how long the driver has been driving a bus. That's because chances of an accident happening is reduced with a well rested driver behind the wheels.
Other suggestions that will be put forth will be fitting all seats in a luxury bus with seat belts and fitting buses with speed limiters. At present, only a couple of selected seats have safety belts.
The Center is also said to be considering setting up a common standard (Bus Body Code) relating to materials that should be used in buses, to make them safer. This would keep flammable materials such as wood from being used in the construction of these buses.
These changes are likely to be implemented first in buses that are operated by state transport departments of Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, where Volvo and other luxury bus services are popular.
