Nissan LEAF In Bhutan To Take The Role Of Taxi & Government Vehicles
It was only last week that Chetan Maini, CEO of Mahindra Reva conveyed to us that the company was looking to introduce the Verito Electric sedan in Bhutan. The Himalayan kingdom is looking to become the first zero emission country in the world and the first step would be to turn its entire taxi and government vehicle fleet to electric vehicles.

A fresh report on ET now states that Thimphu has agreed to partner with Japanese auto major Nissan to introduce the LEAF electric vehicle in the country. As part of the deal, announced on Feb 21, Nissan will set up charging stations for the LEAF across the small nation.
Bhutan, which has ample hydro-electric power generating capacity, is looking to reduce its dependency on other countries for fossil fuel imports. Does this mean Mahindra has lost a golden opportunity to bring out production versions of it Verito Electric? Or is Bhutan's deal with Nissan not exclusive, allowing other manufacturers to bring their electric vehicles as well? We are yet to know the answers.

Nissan LEAF (Leading, Environmentally friendly, Affordable, Family car) is a multiple "Car of The Year" award winning, all electric five seater hatchback that's the world's best selling electric vehicle till date, with over 100,000 units sold since late 2010.
With a claimed range of 200 km and a petrol equivalent fuel economy of 53 kmpl, the 24 kWh battery pack not only powers a 80 kW (110 hp) and 280 Nm electric motor but is even capable of powering your house when required. The Nissan LEAF is also relatively high on luxury and comes packed with technology & features.
Mahindra Verito Electric, in contrast, is mostly untested. Though, some of the technology used in it also features in the Reva e2o electric hatchback. It is also a basic sedan with the perhaps the only advantage being its spacious interior. Mahindra could, however, provide the Verito Electric for a lower price than the Nissan Leaf.
Tesla is another emerging electric car company that cannot be ignored. At present the Model S could be termed as a luxury electric sedan. But Elon Musk has huge expansion plans in Asia which could extend to Bhutan and even India in the not too distant future.
