Audi Discontinues Multitronic CVT Transmissions
The German car maker Audi has confirmed that their CVT or Continuously Variable Transmission in their cars have been discontinued. They were one among the first to use this gearbox a decade ago.
Speaking at a briefing in Sweden, Ralph Rigger, head of V6 TDI development, said that the Multi-tronic (Audi's term for CVT) has been stopped across all models.
Audi will have the new seven-speed, dual clutch, S-tronic gearbox mated to all the future models.
Rigger said there will be a coexistence of two gearboxes: the new S tronic and the existing Tiptronic [torque converter automatic].
He said that the old Multitronic gearbox offered very good benefits as the engine revs could be kept low. The same could be achieved with the new S tronic gearbox, he said.
Rigger confirmed that the gearbox is not being produced anymore. He said the CVT served its purpose for a decade and it was very fuel efficient. This new gearbox is better, he says.

The S tronic transmission will be an evolution of the DSG gearbox which is already present in other vehicles in parent-company Volkswagen's line up.
The new gearbox will make it into the new Audi's with the arrival of the ‘B9' series A4, which will be launched next year.
