WRC Rally Mexico: Kris Meeke Wins Despite Drifting Through Car Park
Citroen driver Kris Meeke has won the first gravel rally of the season, Rally Mexico. In the final stage, Meeke went off the road and somehow managed to get back on the road.
The third round of the FIA World Rally Championship, Rally Mexico victory went to Citroen driver Kris Meeke. The British driver delivered the first victory for the new-generation C3 WRC in 2017.
But the victory was not a walk in the park for Meeke. In the final power stage of the rally, Meeke went off the road and was forced to manoeuvre the C3 WRC in the middle of parked cars to rejoin the stage. But he managed to do that and crossed the finish line.
M-Sport driver Sebastien Ogier finished second as the new-gen Fiesta WRC struggled in thin air. Ogier also committed a mistake on the second day and had to settle for second place. But the Frenchman now holds the championship lead and M-Sport has extended the lead in manufacturer standings.
Hyundai driver Thierry Neuville finished the rally for the first time in 2017. The Belgian driver suffered fuel filter issue on the i20 Coupe WRC, but he still managed to finish third and also won the power stage.
For the first time in 2017, Ogier's team-mate Ott Tanak finished outside the podium position. He ended the rally in the fourth place. Hyundai driver Hayden Paddon finished fifth in the first gravel rally of 2017.
Previous round winner, Toyota driver Jari-Matti Latvala finished sixth. The Finn was forced to sweep the loose gravel on Friday, and the engine issues also contributed to the cause. His teammate Juho Hanninen finished seventh despite illness.
Third Hyundai driver, Dani Sordo also had a dramatic rally. He also suffered fuel filter issues like his teammates and finished in the eighth position. DMack driver Elfyn Evans rounded off the top nine WRC finishers.
