The definition of "city cars" (or "urban cars" or "mini cars") is a small passenger car with length size less than 3.7 meters and is mainly intended to be primarily used inside the city or urban areas. Regions around the globe refer to it differently such as subcompact in North America, superminis by Euro NCAP, European commission refers to it as A-segment and Japan call it the Kei cars.

10. Ford KA (Figo)
The made-in-India Ford Figo has found favour outside of India with sales of 135,678 units in 2016. However, there is a decline of 17.6 percent compared to 2015. The Ford Figo or the KA is manufactured in India and Brazil for the European, Brazil and the Indian market.
Ford KA is based on the company's ‘Global B Platform' which underpins the Fiesta as well. The current Ford KA is in its third generation and is available in both petrol and in diesel engines. Ford is using its 1.2-litre Ti-VCT petrol engine and the diesel unit is a 1.5-litre TDCi, both paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox.
9. Hyundai i10
Another known model in India, the Hyundai i10 made it to the top 10 selling city cars list with global sales of 147,144 for the year 2016. However, this is a decline compared to 2015 by 12.5 percent.
The Hyundai i10 is the first generation with a facelift introduced in 2010 sporting Hyundai's Fluidic Sculpture design language. The i10 is available in 1.0-, 1.1- and 1.2-litre petrol engine and there is a 1.1-litre diesel unit. The i10 engine is available in 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic gearbox options.
8. Daihatsu Tanto
Daihatsu introduced the Tanto in 2003 at the Tokyo show as concept vehicle and was built on the tall boy design language, this was later launched in the same year in the Japanese market. The unique feature of the Daihatsu Tanto is an ordinary door on the right, while the left and the rear door is a sliding door without an intermediate pillar.
Daihatsu sold 160,603 units of the Tanto in 2016 registering an increase in sales of 1.8 percent when compared to the previous period. The Tanto is referred to as a 5-door hatchback MPV and is powered by a 659cc petrol engine and comes mated to either a 3-speed or 4-speed automatic gearbox.
7. Volkswagen up!
The Volkswagen Up is stylised as Volkswagen up! The VW up! Is part of the group's New Small Family (NSF) series of models. The VW Up was unveiled in 2011 at the International Motor Show in Germany. The Up won the World Car of the Year in 2012.
Volkswagen sold 163,463 units of the Up in the year 2016 making it to the top 10 selling cars in the world with a decline in sales by 8.8 percent over 2015. The VW Up is available in 3-door and 4-door models and is powered by a 1.0-litre engine; however, the engine comes is different states of tune.
6. Hyundai Grand i10
India's largest car exporter, Hyundai's Grand i10 is not only the top 10 selling cars in India, it is among the top 10 selling city cars in the world. The Grand i10 is a second-generation model of the i10 and is in production from 2013. Hyundai manufacturers the Grand i10 in India, Turkey, Mozambique, Algeria and in Iran.
Hyundai sold 171,101 units of the Grand i10 with an increase in sales by 4.8 percent compared to sales in 2015. The Grand i10 is a 5-door hatchback and comes with powertrains of 1.0- and 1.25-litre petrol units and the 1.1-litre diesel unit which comes mated with options of either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic.
5. Maruti Wagon R
Maruti seems to at the top 10 selling cars in India and the world over. The humble and evergreen Wagon R makes it to the top 10 selling city cars in the world in 2016 with sales of 171,175 registering 1 percent increase in sales compared to 2015.
The badge WagonR is been in use from 1993 and R in the name refers to ‘Recreation'. The Wagon R is considered to be the first car with the "tall boy" design language. As of 2010, Suzuki has sold nearly 5 million units of the WagonR and has been the most successful car for Suzuki. Maruti has powered the Wagon R by a 998cc petrol engine which is paired either with the 5-speed manual gearbox or the AMT automatic gearbox.
4. Fiat 500
The stylish looking Fiat 500 is a two-door, four-passenger manufactured by Fiat's subdivision Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) since 2007 in hatchback coupe and fixed-profile cabriolet body styles. The Fiat 500 was derived from the 2004 Fiat Trepiuno 3+1 concept and the styling recalls Fiat's original 1957 Fiat 500 and features Dante Giacosa 1964 breakthrough front-wheel drive breakthrough layout - which ultimately became an industry standard.
Fiat manufacturers the 500 in Poland and in Mexico and has sold 181,749 units in 2016 though a decline in sales by 5.2 percent compared to 2015. Fiat has powered the 500 with a choice of 0.9-litre to 1.4-litre engine and comes in different states of tunes.
3. Fiat Panda
The Fiat Panda is a city car and the first generation was introduced back in 1980 with minimal changes till about 2003 when the second generation was launched. The Alto brand was introduced by Suzuki back in 1979 and has been built in many countries worldwide. India was introduced to the Alto in 200 by Suzuki and manufactured by Maruti Suzuki. The Maruti Alto is the best-selling car in India and has been a successful model from Maruti Suzuki.
The front-wheel drive, the 5-door hatchback is available in both 800cc and 1.1-litre engines. Maruti sells nearly 23,000 units every month from its manufacturing in India which includes both domestic and export sales. Maruti has sold a total of 256,514 units for the year 2016 making it the best-selling city car in the world list for 2016.
