Swedish carmaker Volvo is aiming for expansion in India and one key role to do so is by starting an assembly plant in the country, as reported by ET.

Volvo's goal is to have competitively priced vehicles in India to rival carmakers such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and Jaguar Land Rover. The carmaker is also eyeing double-digit growth in India.

Currently, Volvo has offerings in the Indian market priced at Rs 26 lakh for the Volvo V40 hatchback to the flagship Volvo XC90 hybrid SUV, priced at Rs 1.26 crore.

Tom von Bonsdorff, the Managing Director of Volvo's Business in India told TOI, "Our volumes may be low in India, but we have been growing. An assembly operation is being worked upon and may happen soon, once a final decision is taken by the headquarters."

Other Volvo models currently on sale in India are the S60, S90, XC60 (SUV) and the recently launched performance oriented vehicle, the S60 Polestar.
