World Record Road Safety Lesson Can't Change India's Fatal Driving Habits
The traffic awareness campaign have failed to put brakes on the increasing road fatalities in the country.
The Nashik city police organised a traffic awareness drive a month ago to put a brake on increasing road fatalities. But there are no significant improvements in the driving sense of motorists.
The police have recorded 29 fatal accident cases this year till February 24; it's the same number of accidents recorded in the corresponding period last year. According to cops, the main reason for such accidents is negligent driving.
But the overall accidents have reduced compared to last year. This year police have recorded 76 accident cases as opposed to the 104 cases registered last year from January 1 to February 24.
The city police have taken various measures to ensure that the motorists will follow the traffic rules so that the number of accidents can come down. But the response from two-wheeler riders is lukewarm.
So the cops have decided to make a particular entry in case of an accident of a two-wheeler where it will be entered whether the rider was wearing a helmet or not.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Jayant Bajbale stated that the aim of this initiative is to ensure that the two-wheeler riders are wearing helmets and necessary safety gears. During an accident, if the rider is not wearing a helmet then the chances of the insurance claim will be nil.
The senior police officials are also noting down the accident-prone spots and have proposed the necessary work to be done to the civic body. After all the hard work it is a shame that the motorists are still negligent about following traffic rules.
