There seem to be no carmakers to stop the juggernaut of Maruti Suzuki's impressive sales in India. The company sold one in every two cars in January 2017, consolidating its grip on the Indian automobile industry.

Maruti Suzuki has understood the market no better than any other brands in the country. The runaway success of its premium hatchback Baleno and the compact SUV Brezza, the company made 50.4 percent of vehicles sold in the month. Of the top 10 selling cars in India in January, eight of them are badged- Maruti Suzuki.

10. Maruti Suzuki Omni

The OMNIpresent van has made a comeback to the top 10 selling cars in January 2017. The company sold as many as 8,723 units registering a massive 48 percent growth compared to 2016.

Maruti Suzuki sells the Omni as a passenger vehicle, cargo and in the ambulance avatar. The Maruti Omni is powered by 796cc three-cylinder engine producing 34.2bhp and 59Nm of torque paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox.

9. Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza

The demonetization scheme seems to have not hampered the sales of the Vitara Brezza from Maruti Suzuki. Maruti sold 8,932 units of the Brezza in January 2017; the model being one of the two which has been impressive in its sales.

Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza is currently available only with the 1.3-litre DDiS diesel unit developing 88.5bhp and 200Nm of torque. The gearbox duty is taken care by a 5-speed manual transmission.

8. Hyundai Elite i20

Hyundai is the only other manufacturer to feature in the top 10 selling cars in India for January 2017. The company has two models in the list, the Elite i20 ranked eighth on the list with sales of 10,010 units in January 2017.

The Elite i20 was the first premium hatchback apart from the Polo to be launched in India. Hyundai offers the Elite i20 with 1.2-litre and 1.4-litre petrol units with the latter mated to a 4-speed automatic gearbox. There is also the 1.4-litre diesel unit paired to a 6-speed manual gearbox.

7. Maruti Suzuki Baleno

The other premium hatchback performing well is the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, the company sold 10,470 units in January 2017. Maruti sold 460 units more than its closest rival the Hyundai Elite i20; registering an increase in growth of 36 percent compared to the previous year.

Maruti Suzuki offers the Baleno through its premium dealership NEXA. The Baleno is available in both petrol and diesel units. While the petrol unit is a 1.2-litre and comes mated either with a 5-speed manual or the CVT automatic gearbox, the diesel unit is a 1.3-litre paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox.

6. Maruti Suzuki Celerio

Maruti Suzuki was the first to introduce the Automatic Manual Transmission (AMT) technology to India. This technology was first used in the Celerio small hatchback. One of the main reasons for the sales of Celerio is for this reason of AMT. The company sold 10,870 units registering a massive 52 percent increase in sales compared to 2016.

The Celerio is available in petrol and diesel engines, while the petrol unit is a 998cc mill with the option of 5-speed manual or the 5-speed AMT gearbox, the diesel unit is the 793cc engine. There is speculation that the diesel model of the Celerio will be discontinued in the coming future. Maruti also offers a CNG model along with the petrol version.

5. Hyundai Grand i10

The Grand i10 is the other model of Hyundai in the list of top 10 selling cars in January 2017 apart from the Elite i20. The Grand i10 has been a consistent performer for the South Korean automaker with sales in January numbering to 13,010 units. The company registered an increase of 31 percent compared to the same period in 2016.

Hyundai has launched the facelifted Grand i10 with the starting price tag of Rs 4.58 lakh ex-showroom (Delhi). The new Grand i10 is available as a 1.2-litre engine in both petrol and diesel units. While the petrol will be available with either the 5-speed manual or the 4-speed automatic gearbox, the diesel is available only with the 5-speed manual gearbox.

4. Maruti Suzuki Swift

Maruti Suzuki Swift is one of the successful brands for the company. The company registered a simple 3 percent growth in sales; however, enough to be among the top 4 selling cars in India. Maruti Suzuki sold 14,540 Swifts in January 2017. The company is all set to launch the next-generation Swift by the third quarter of this fiscal.

The company sold 14,900 units in January 2017 and registered 17 percent growth compared to the same period in 2016.

Based on the Swift platform, the Dzire from Maruti Suzuki has vowed many with its feature, fuel efficiency and the affordable pricing for a subcompact sedan. The company sold 18,000 units in January 2017 with the growth of 3 percent. The DZire will be facelifted and the launch is expected to hit the Indian market later this year.
