The year 2016 was significant for the Indian automobile industry, it outpaced the market by 3.5 million vehicles sales. This is a new record for the market which has catapulted India as the 5th largest automobile market in the world.

Here is the list of top 10 selling cars in India in 2016:

10. Maruti Suzuki Celerio

Maruti Suzuki was the first to introduce the AMT gearbox feature in the Indian car market. This was launched with the Celerio offering AMT in both petrol and diesel models. The Celerio was able to offer the Indian buyers with the option of affordable automatic gearbox models in the country.

Maruti Suzuki sold 90,481 units of Celerio in 2016 compared to 82,961 units in 2015, registering 9.1 percent increase in sales. The Maruti Celerio is powered with the option of petrol or diesel engines. While the petrol unit is a 1.0-litre unit, the diesel is a 0.8-litre engine.

9. Hyundai Creta

The compact SUV from Hyundai is among the new generation models which have led the Indian market in 2016. The Hyundai Creta is backed by good quality features and the company's post sales and service network. The Creta is among the top 10 selling cars in India in 2016 because of its feature-rich interiors and its powerful engine.

Hyundai sold 92,926 units in 2016 in India compared to 40,952 units in 2015. The company registered an increase in sales of the Creta by 126.9 percent. Hyundai has powered the Creta with the choice of 1.6-litre petrol or diesel units which comes paired with either the 6-speed manual or automatic gearbox. Also, available is the 1.4-litre diesel unit mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox.

8. Renault Kwid

The star of the top 10 selling cars in India in 2016 is the Renault Kwid. The French company registered sales of 489.7 percent increase compared to 2015. While the company was able to sell 17,933 units in 2015, Renault sold 105,745 units in 2016, leading as the best performer on this list.

Renault offers the Kwid in 0.8-litre and 1.0-litre options and comes only as a petrol model. While the 0.8-litre unit is paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox, the 1.0-litre model has the option of 5-speed manual or the AMT gearbox. The Kwid is feature-rich with touchscreen infotainment system with an affordable package giving an edge over its rivals.

7. Maruti Suzuki Baleno

Another star performer in the top selling cars in India in 2016 was the Baleno premium hatchback. Maruti Suzuki which was not able to break into the premium segment in the countrylaunched the Baleno under its premium dealership NEXA and tasted success in sales.

The company equipped the Baleno with standard fitments such as dual airbags, ABS with EBD among others which helped the company sell more number of Balenos in India. The Maruti Baleno is powered by the 1.2-litre petrol or the 1.3-litre diesel engines. While the petrol model is available with the choice of either the 5-speed manual or the CVT gearbox.

6. Hyundai Elite i20

Hyundai which is the second largest car manufacturer in India introduced India to a premium hatchback car with the launch of the Elite i20. The Hyundai i20 is powerful and its performance has been backed by the company's robust sales and service network in India. Hyundai sold 122,491 units in 2016, while it sold 130,084 units in 2015, registering a slight decrease in sales of 5.8 percent comparatively.

The reason can be attributed to the popularity of the Maruti Baleno eating into the sales of the i20. With better features on the Baleno, the i20 has taken a hit in sales. The Creta is available with the 1.2-litre and the 1.4-litre petrol engines, while the diesel model is powered by the 1.4-litre engine mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. As for the petrol units, the 1.2-litre is paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox and the 1.4-litre is mated to a 4-speed automatic gearbox.

5. Hyundai Grand i10

The Hyundai Grand i10 is the top selling car for the South Korean car manufacturer in the domestic market as well as the best export model from India. The Grand i10 is a well packaged small hatchback and is feature-rich.

Hyundai sold 136,187 units in 2016 compared to 124,055 units in 2015. The company registered sales of 9.8 percent increase in sales of the Grand i10 and moved up the rankings from 6th to 5th position in the list. The Grand i10 is available in 1.1-litre diesel unit and 1.2-litre petrol engine, both come mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox.

4. Maruti Suzuki Swift

Maruti Suzuki revolutionised the small hatchback segment with the introduction of the Swift. The Swift is sporty and modern in design and it immediately captured the imagination of the Indian auto enthusiasts. Maruti sold 168,555 units in 2016 compared to 206,924 units in 2015 registering decline in sales of 18.5 percent.

The decline could be attributed to making way for the next-generation Swift set to launch later in 2017. Maruti offers the Swift in the 1.2-litre petrol and a1.3-litre diesel engine which is mated to the 5-speed manual gearbox.

3. Maruti Suzuki Wagon R

The evergreen vehicle from Maruti Suzuki, the Wagon R was launched back in 1999 and has continued to impress the car maker. Maruti sold 173,286 units in 2016 compared to 170,399 units in 2015, registering anincrease in sales by 1.7 percent.

The Maruti WagonR is a spacious hatchback offering multiple storages. The WagonR has been developed for the Indian family with different seat option for storage. Maruti WagonR is powered by the 1.0-litre petrol engine and is available in CNG model as well.

2. Maruti Suzuki DZire

The Maruti DZire revolutionised the subcompact sedan segment with the class leading mileage with affordable pricing. The DZire is loaded with features such as dual airbags and ABS with EBD as optional. Maruti sold 202,076 units in 2016, while it was able to sell 236,038 units in 2015. The decline of 14.4 percent can be attributed to therecent trend in preference of SUVs over to sedans.

Maruti is all set to launch the next-generation DZire and it could help increase sales compared to SUVs. Maruti offers the DZire in 1.2-litre which is mated either with the choice of 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic gearbox. The 1.3-litre diesel unit of the DZire is paired either with the option of 5-speed manual or AMT gearbox.

1. Maruti Suzuki Alto

Maruti Suzuki Alto continues to rule the top 10 selling cars in India in both 2016 and 2015. The company sold 245,094 units in 2016 compared to 272,096 units in 2015. The decline in sales of 9.9 percent is mainly due to increased competition from the Renault Kwid.

The Alto is still a preferred vehicle in India as it comes with the backing of Maruti's wide network of sales and service dealers. Maruti launched the Alto back in 2000 and there was no turning back for the company, the Alto is the best selling car in India in 2016. The Alto is powered with the choice of 0.8-litre and 1.0-litre engines. While the 800cc Alto is available in the5-speed manual gearbox, the 1.0-litre model is available with the choice of either the 5-speed manual or the AMT gearbox.
