Toyota: Third Le Mans Entry Was A Waste
Toyota has stated that the third entry at the Le Mans 24 Hour race was a waste as the car failed to finish the race.
Toyota General Manager, Hisatake Murata has stated that the third Le Mans 24 Hours may have been a 'waste’.
The Japanese team fielded three cars for the first time since 1999. In a bid to win the 2017 Le Mans 24 Hours race, Toyota entered an additional TS050 Hybrid.
But the #9 car driven by Nicolas Lapierre, Jose Maria Lopez and Yuji Kunimoto did not finish the race after being eliminated due to crash. The Toyota machine was hit by Manor LMP2 car from behind.
Lapierre tried to nurse the car back to the pits, but with a left-rear puncture, the car suffered significant damage, and he was forced to stop. Soon after that the #7 leading Toyota also suffered clutch problems due to a bizarre pit accident.
Murata said, “The #9 car was a waste, as [Lapierre] was pushing in a place he did not need to push and he was hit from behind. If that car survived, it would have been able to win.”
