Supreme Court Criticises Auto Companies Over Phasing Out Of BS-III Vehicles
Supreme Court has criticised the automobile manufacturers for not responding to its queries on BS-III vehicles. Despite repeated queries from Supreme Court, the manufacturers did not respond.
Supreme Court has criticised automobile manufacturers for not responding to its queries on phasing out of BS-III vehicles. The manufacturing and sale of BS-III vehicles are banned in India from April 1, 2017.
Supreme Court sarcastically stated that Apple's voice-controlled virtual assistant, Siri could have given a more definitive answer to the questions. The Supreme Court had repeated queries on the BS-III vehicles, but the automakers did not respond.
A bench of Justices, Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta said, "We questioned counsel for the interveners (auto firms) on the time required for disposal of the accumulated stock."
Justices further said, "No one gave any definite answer, the answers varied from about 5 and 6 months to one year and hedged in with conditions dependent upon market forces and slow moving models. Perhaps Siri would have given a more definite answer."
From the submissions of the auto companies, Supreme Court noted that manufacturers expected to sell the BS-III vehicles after April 1, 2017, to clear the stock.
The Justice bench said, "Given the experience of the past, they legitimately expected that they would be allowed to clear the accumulated stock."
