Land Rover Lifts The Veil; Reveals All-New Range Rover Velar
Land Rover has unveiled the latest addition to its lineup in the form of the Velar, which sits between the Evoque and the Range Rover Sport.
British SUV manufacturer Land Rover has revealed the Range Rover Velar ahead of its public debut at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show.
The new SUV is the fourth model in the Range Rover lineup of SUVs and sits between the Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Sport and is underpinned by the same technology used by the Jaguar F-Pace.
Powering the new Velar are four engines: two petrol and two diesel which send power to all four wheels through an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The base 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder Ingenium petrol engine is available in two guises: 247bhp and 365Nm of torque in the basic form and 296bhp and 400Nm in a more powerful version setup set to arrive later this year.
Similarly, the base 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine is also avaialble in two guises: 178bhp and 430Nm of torque and a more potent 237bhp and 500Nm.
The most potent diesel engine is a 3.0-litre turbo V6 that cranks out 296bhp and 700Nm of torque. The 3.0-litre V6 petrol is the only non-turbocharged engine in the range, using a supercharger instead to produce 375bhp and 450Nm of torque. The supercharged petrol Velar will sprint from 0-60mph (96.5km/h) in just 5.3 seconds.
The all-new Velar is 4,803mm long, only 50mm smaller than the Range Rover Sport but is just 5mm taller than the Evoque at 1,640mm. This can be seen in the design of the SUV with the Velar sporting a coupe-ish look with a steeply raked windscreen and a low roofline. The sleek headlamps and taillamps are an evolution of the Evoque's design.
Inside, the Range Rover Velar sports the latest evolution of Land Rover's design language with a large panoramic roof on top and three displays dominating the dashboard. One of these displays replaces the instrument binnacle while another one controls the infotainment display and tilts forward when the vehicle is fired up.
A third display replaces the buttons and dials for the suspension and gearbox settings along with climate control and the heated seats. Like the tilt screen display and the controls on the steering wheel, it too remains dark until the Velar is fired up.
Land Rover is accepting bookings for the new Range Rover Velar and first deliveries of the new SUV are expected to start in July.
