Peuegeot Considering Return To The 24 Hours Of Le Mans Provided The Cost Is Right
Peugeot is considering a return to the LMP1 class of the 24 Hours of Le Mansbut only if monetary conditions are met.
French carmaker Peugeot is looking to return to the top prototype class of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the World Endurance Championship (WEC) 5 years after it withdrew from LMP1 racing.
The French carmaker participated in Le Mans for 5 years and went on to win the race in 2009 beating Audi. Peugeot also won the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup title in both 2010 and 2011.
Speaking to Autocar at the Geneva Motor Show, Peugeot chief Jean-Philippe Imparato said, "We have always said we will return if three conditions are met: firstly, we as a company are making money; secondly, we have won the Dakar Rally, and thirdly, the cost of competition cannot be over €200m per year. The first two conditions are now met, the third is not. We are studying a return, but the regulations must be easier on the budget."
The WEC has been cutting budgets slightly over the past few years in a bid to keep the costs down. However, with 13-time Le Mans winner Audi out of the WEC due to the aftereffects of the infamous Volkswagen emission scandal, the endurance racing may well listen to the French carmaker's demands. Let's hope it it happens.
