Mercedes-Benz X-Class Pickup Truck Revealed
German auto major Mercedes-Benz has revealed the production version of the X-Class pickup truck.
German auto major Mercedes-Benz has revealed the production version of the X-Class pickup truck in South Africa.The company calls the X-Class as the world's first premium pickup truck.
The Mercedes-Benz X-Class is a five-seat four-door pickup truck. It will be offered with a choice of four engine options with selectable or permanent four-wheel-drive-system. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual or 7-speed automatic gearbox.
Mercedes-Benz claims that the X-Class can be used as an off-road vehicle as well as a vehicle for the urban environment. The automaker is aiming to tap into the rising demand for pickup trucks with a touch of elegance and luxury.
The X-Class will be offered with a 4-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. The X 200 model will come with a petrol engine producing 161bhp. The X 220d will feature a 2.3-litre turbocharged diesel engine churning out 163bhp. The X 250d will come with the same engine but with twin-turbo pumping out 187bhp.
Later in 2018, Mercedes-Benz will also offer the X 350d model equipped with a 6-cylinder engine producing 255bhp. The X 220d and the X 250d will come with selectable four-wheel-drive system, whereas the V6 engine will get permanent four-wheel-drive system.
The X-Class pickup truck is based on the chassis of the Nissan Navara. But Mercedes-Benz uses coil springs at the front and the rear. The X-Class will be available in three trim levels - Pure, Progressive and Power.
Pickup trucks are designed to carry loads, and the X-Class can haul loads up to 1,042kg. Mercedes-Benz claims that the pickup truck will also tow loads up to 3.5 tonne.
The X-Class will feature several options and accessories which include, soft and hard tonneau covers, a bed divider system, bed floor rails and a technical underguard or a skid plate.
The safety features on the X-Class include active lane control, traffic sign recognition, and forward collision warnings with automatic emergency braking. The interior sports an 8.4-inch infotainment system with Mercedes ME connectivity features.
The Mercedes-Benz X-Class will go on sale in the European market in November 2017. The pickup truck will hit South Africa and Australia in 2018. Later in 2019, Mercedes-Benz will launch the X-Class in Argentina and Brazil. There are no plans to retail the pickup truck in the US market.

The X-Class is the first pickup truck from the German luxury car maker. The X-Class is equipped with premium features as the company calls it the world's first premium pickup truck. The design has drastically changed compared to the concept model. It will be interesting to see if Mercedes-Benz will bring this product to India.
